The Sterling-Rock Falls Historical Society is proud to present “From New York to the Heartland: The Orphan Train Experience in Illinois,” a Road Scholar program by Jamie Poorman.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, thousands of orphaned and destitute children left the crowded streets of New York City aboard what became known as the Orphan Trains. Over the course of 75 years, an estimated 250,000 children were sent to new homes and new lives in communities across the country, including many here in Illinois.
This fascinating program will explore the origins of the Orphan Train Movement, the organizations behind it, and the journeys experienced by the children. Special attention will be given to Illinois’ unique connection to the movement and the stories of several Orphan Train riders who arrived in Illinois in 1884—their lives before the journey, their trip west, and what became of them afterward.
Audience members with Orphan Train connections in their own family histories will also have an opportunity to share their stories.
Admission is free, and all are welcome to attend this fascinating and educational afternoon exploring one of the most remarkable chapters in American history.
